Temple Stay

I know that I promised to write about this last week but I got all wrapped up in nothing and sat on my ass instead. Truth be told I have been spending long hours at work and haven't felt like doing much when I get home. I had another long day today but this sounds better than sleeping so here I am. I hope you enjoy the fruits of my effort. (insert smiley emoticon here)

On with the story....
I was sitting down to eat some of that slop the the Air Force Services personnel continuously provide for sustenance under the pretense of being intended for human consumption, when a co-worker told me he had signed up for a temple stay. I was familiar with the program due to the fact that a few of my friends have participated in similar programs under the same name. It turns out that there are hundreds of temples across the Korean peninsula that offer programs that allow anyone to enter the temples and chill with the monks. Generally they have a program set in mind for each temple and they vary from temple to temple. I am pretty sure you could easily sign up for a temple stay at a different temple every weekend for an entire year and the only similarity of the visits would be the awesome fried tofu and the smiling Buddhist monks.

So, my friend signed up for a temple stay at Jikjisa temple near Gimcheon. There are not many people in our line of work that would be open minded enough to even consider the idea of spending a peaceful weekend in silence and meditation with some Buddhist monks who don't even drink. There would be no shots, no juicys, no meat and no hip hop gurgling through the bleeding crack that used to be your eardrum. I had actually been considering a temple stay for a while but the opportunity had not presented itself and I think I would have chickened out if I was to try and go alone. I was pretty stoked when he told me about it and told him right away that I was definitely in.

He sent me the temple stay Facebook. Which is all screwy and not really useful to those of us that don't speak Korean or read Hangul very well. http://www.facebook.com/templestay It is just a normal user profile but they will befriend you without question and there is a little bit of info on there. The most valuable bit of info is the link to the english version of the website where you can find a program that is right for you, pick your temple and register for a wicked cool Buddhist monk adventure of your own. Check out the website at http://eng.templestay.com/. I have seen pictures from friends temple stay adventure where they are all just chillaxin and interacting in a quiet temple environment, going on meditation walks, beating a large pile of rice stuff with a mallet (which is actually how they prepare a type of gummy rice food here), and generally taking it slow and easy. That was not at all the case for my weekend.

Here is a picture of our schedule for the weekend:

We were the first to arrive at about 2PM. We got all checked in at the main office and some giggly volunteer high school girls escorted us to the main gathering hall. Once everyone had arrived we began the orientation. Fortunately for myself and the eleven or so other folks that did not speak Korean, all the instructions were in Korean and the monks talking to us only did so in Korean. I know by looking at the schedule that I learned a lot about temple etiquette. We sat patiently on the floor cross legged passing a sideways glance here and there to make sure that we weren't the only clueless one in the room. I think we could safely say that there was about 35-40 people total in our group which meant that 2/3 of the group was laughing at the monks jokes and the rest of of probably assumed they were laughing at us.

It quickly because apparent that this was going to be a 24 hours game of follow the leader. We weren't supposed to talk at all, which really wasn't hard because you can only ask the other English speaking folks in your group, "what is going on?" so many times before the empty shrug get annoying. At least they gave us all these wicked comfy pajamas to strut around in. I don't know what the outfit is called but it was seriously about the most comfortable outfit I have ever worn in my life! Alright that might be a bit of an exaggeration but seriously if these outfits were for sale I would have bought one just to relax around the house in.

It is about 5:30 PM and everyone is getting up, it must be time for dinner. I get a flashback from basic training as we form it up outside and await notification to proceed to chow. They line us up into four lines and lead us down to the cafeteria. Once again, follow the leader, these foods are foreign and you don't really know what to expect so I just get a little of each to be safe. We file through the line grabbing a little bit of everything and then proceed to the table. Once the table is full the monk says something and everyone looks at a sign on the wall and begins to read it. Once they are done reading we got the all clear from the monk to dig in. Kimchi, and Tofu and a bunch of things I don't know were pretty fantastic really. I wish our military dining facility would prepare a meal half as worthy of consumption. As we were finishing up the monk seamed very concerned about the little bits of food that were left on our plates. I got the idea that I needed to devour every single morsel of food that I had committed to. Nothing was to be wasted. At this point I noticed the seven or eight year old boy sitting at my table having a very difficult time with one of the dishes. His mother ate the dish for him in the end but not for lack of trying. That kid continued to impress me with his obedience and effort to participate in this program.

Food was gone and it was time to clean the plates and head back inside. Once we all returned they gathered us up with our flat sitting pillow thingys (yeah I have no idea what they are called, yes I am aware I could look it up but I don't want to.) and led us to a temple. Try not to get this elaborate image in your head about a huge temple structure. The temples are small buildings with a shrine inside.

Once we arrived at the temple we silently lined up and squeezed in to make room for everyone (It was a tight fit.) Then the Yabul chanting began. This is a ritual where the monks chant while doing a series of full bows. By full bow I mean, you stand with your hands in a prayer pose and then kneel to the ground and lower your hands to the floor, place your forehead on the ground and turn your hands upright and raise them slightly (You can see it in many of the images) then rise back to the originating position. The sound of the monks chanting, the harmony, the reverberation off the walls, it was very powerful. I wish I could have found a proper recording of the monks I was with doing the chants.

After the Yabul chant was complete we started right in to our 108 bows. It is exactly what it is called, yes, that is right, one hundred and eight bows. These are conducted in sync, at the command of the monk with the slap stick noise maker thing. After about thirty two, I lost count. After what I would guess was about seventy, I wanted to quit. After one hundred and eight full bows, I was ready for a nap. The 108 bows is intended to improve concentration and focus. We say a video where people were trying to get through some twenty thousand bows, one of our hosts tried to explain in English but I did not understand the point of such a feat. The video also spoke of a girl that wanted to be a model but she had a crooked spine. She completed the 108 bows every morning and night for over a year and her spine was healed. They also mentioned that students do the 108 bows in school during breaks in class in order to improve focus and mental discipline. From my experience I can see how the practice of 108 bows regularly could help to tame the wild mind and improve focus with the added benefit of being a decent cardio workout.

That night we completed the Yabul chanting session, followed by 108 bows. We then went back to the meeting hall we started in. I am not really sure what exactly transpired but we were penalized for something and had to complete another set of 108 bows. Shortly after that a couple of kids in our group got busted slapping each other and caused us to do another set of 108 bows. All in all between dinner and tea time I figure we completed about 500 bows. One of the people in the group just stopped bowing and lay down on the pillow thingy, "WUSS!"

The monks were very concerned, almost OCD, with the alignment of like items. When we lined up on our pillows they wanted the pillows evenly spaced and aligned to the slats on the hardwood floor. When they served our tea it was the same story. They passed us each a piece of paper to place in front of our pillow and then each of us was handed a paper cup. We had to place the paper squarely in front of our pillow and aligned with the person next to us and the cup in the center of the paper. If it was adjusted wrong they would point at it and nudge until we corrected it.
I think the tea was a ginger tea. I am not exactly a connoisseur but it was pretty amazing tea. Although I tried to sip it while it was hot and the steam attempted to choke me to death. I learned that steam from ginger tea does not for a good nebulized inhalant.

It would appear that I am being a bit more long winded than I had originally intended with this entry. There is just so much that happened within a short period of time I want to relive it all right here. But there is no time for that and I doubt anyone would really want to read about my weekend in that much detail. I am however going to cut this off for tonight and continue another night. After we had tea we completed another set of 108 bows and then went to bed, it was almost 10PM and we had to get up at 3AM to begin the new day.

To be continued...

Microsoft Excel vs the Julian Date

I had a need, so I created a solution. My solution might not be the best or the simplest solution but it works for me and you are welcome to use it if it will work for you too. I have searched several times online to find a simple way to convert a date in Microsoft Excel to a Julian date. I have not found a way that works for me yet, until now.

All I did was manually entered the Julian calendar into an excel spreadsheet. There are two separate Julian date calendars because of the fact that Leap years throw off the numbers. The source file can be found here. I inserted some conditional formatting that changes the colors of the calendars from shades of green to shades of red to signify which calendar is being used.

The form is not locked so feel free to poke around and see how the formulas determine the Julian date. I will explain this anyhow because I am bored out of my mind at the moment.
I had to strip the individual parts out of a date field.

A38 is =NOW() which displays the current date.
B38 is =DAY(A38) which extracts the day field from the date
C38 is =TEXT(A38, "Mmm") which extracts the 3 character month as text from the date field
D38 is =RIGHT(YEAR(A38),2) which takes the year from the date field and trims off the century

Now that we have the date all chopped up and usable lets use those pieces to get us a JDATE.
The formula in B40 is =INDEX(A4:M35, MATCH(B38,A4:A35,0), MATCH(C38,A4:M4,0))
Basically that uses the Day and the Month to find the date in the grid for the perpetual calendar.

Now that we have extracted the Day of the year for the JDATE we can concatenate that with the year to get our standard 5 digit JDATE. I know there are different ways to display a Julian date so feel free to hack it up and concatenate it however you need it done. The formula for the structure I need is split by an IF statement to make sure that I maintain a 5 character JDATE. Basically if the day is less than 100 it concatenates a zero in between the year and the day, otherwise it just concatenates the year and the day.

D40 is =IF(B40<100,CONCATENATE(D38,"0",B40),CONCATENATE(D38, B40))

To automatically check to see if the year is a leap year I added another IF statement in I38 that includes an HLOOKUP (horizontal lookup) to check the contents of an array of years that I listed at the top of the leap year calendar. This form will be accurate until the year 2060. I hope I don't care about this by then :D

I38 is =IF(H40="",IF(ISNA(HLOOKUP(YEAR(A38),$O$3:$AA$3,1,FALSE)),"No","Yes"),IF(ISNA(HLOOKUP(YEAR(H40),$O$3:$AA$3,1,FALSE)),"No","Yes"))

In cell H40 You can delete the date to see the Julian date for today or you can enter any date and the form will return the Julian date for that day.

I hope this is helpful to someone some day. If not at least I know where I can find it again. Happy converting :)

WWII? Not today...

I was thinking all night long of what I could possibly do today for a War Week video that would top the on scene footage I leaked out on yesterdays webisode. I decided there was nothing. That was simply the most powerful illustration available to express my thrill, my exuberance, my utter love of Air Force exercises.

On a more serious note, I am exhausted so I will forgo this video and try to put together something that people actually enjoy for tomorrow when I have a little more time. I am thinking something along the lines of MRE bomb exposé. How do they work? What are the hazards? How many Marines does it take to lose an eye with one? You know, the standard stuff.

Much Love folks,
See on the tube tomorrow.

War week 2.0?

So here I am again. There is a war brewing up all around me. I suppose it is time for fight or flight.... "hello, Delta?  Yes I would like........." Just kidding. I am so EF'n tired right now. I think I might do up a couple of videos this week to help illustrate the stoopidity that is the Air Force exercise. Or maybe I will just babble a couple times like I did last time. Either way I feel like there is someone out there that might enjoy a little bit of it :)

Alright folks, for now.... I am sleeping. You will see me tomorrow. Yeah I said what I meant and I meant what I said.
Much love,

The power of basic HTML :D (image / title tags)

This post is here to assist a friend with some basic image formatting inside of bloggers interface but is also just basic HTML that can be used anywhere HTML serves a purpose. I have inserted the punk rock image below the "insert image" link in the toolbar and then uploaded it from my computer. Notice that when you hover your mouse over the top of the image nothing happens.

If you click the "Edit HTML" tab

you will see all the crap that your browser reads to make your post look pretty for your readers. Once you are on that tab you will need to find the image that you want to add a description for.
An image tag opens with a "<img " and closes with a "/>" Everything else between the open and the close tells your browser how to treat the image.
Example:
in the image to the right you see where I have highlighted the entire image tag. There is a (border="0"), (height="320"), (src="location of file on the web"), (width="244").
What we are missing that would be very helpful in some blog posts is the (title="description of the image") tag, where everything between the "" is the description of the image. To add the title tag all you have to do is click in the line and add the tag just like you see in the picture below.

Once this is done you can see the description is now available when you hold you mouse of the image just like the image below.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing and actually helped someone. One thing you will notice is that Blogger's WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor likes to add tags and rearrange everything almost every time you click back and forth from the "Compose" to the "Edit HTML" tabs. Because of this you might want to go ahead and create your entire blog entry then add all your title="" tags and then verify the layout of your page before posting the blog.

So here I sit in contemplation

Spazzy McRandombits wrote down some thoughts. Feel free to laugh, mock, think, or skip. I can assure you there is nothing of great importance here.

I am a unique person, there are many like me.
I like to be alone in crowded places.
I like to be alone with you, anywhere.

I think I am different,
I often wonder if that is because I cannot see how much we are alike.
Maybe it is just inexperience with interpersonal relationships. I feel like I climbed in a hole a long time ago and only allowed a few people to visit me there. It is so hard to get out of that hole and be comfortable. I think I missed out on a lot of life's good lessons.

It is so very strange. I have sat starving for a very long time but I didn't know why I was hungry. I did not know I was starving, let alone even hungry. I remember an emptiness, but not knowing what it was, there was no sense in crying about it. Now that I know, there is not enough time in the day to catch up. Focusing is so difficult. I want to read everything and meditate on nothing and grab a hold of all the things that make me smile and not let go. I want to know... ...all, experience most, and live great.

Don't mind my ramblings :) Love you all
"The problem with life is, by the time you figure out how to live, it's often too late." ~Unkown
I refuse to let it be too late and I will die trying to figure it out way before then :D

A change of plans. (Day 17)

It seems to me that my original plan of posting something every day was just a little bit too ambitious for a one man film, design, animator, editor, bla bla bla... As such and after a few good conversations with a friend, it makes sense that I throttle this back a little bit in order to provide quality over quantity. I honestly feel like this will be more enjoyable for everyone if I take a little more time in creating my posts. I think that a couple of quality posts a week will be much more interesting and effective.

So the new plan is to take my time and try to create one or two good videos a week. I am not going to blog every single day. As you can see I am not really a writer nor should I try to portray someone with talent in that department. I do however, still reserve the right to spit out random rants about whatever topic I feel that I need to rant about. Hopefully doing this will get more people to watch versus being annoyed by my spam, heheh.

Sometimes I wish I was half as clever as I think I am. Hrrrrm....

Perception (Day 14)

Just to clarify, this curiosity doesn't own me always. But I am often curious.

Sleep now! (Day 11-12)

I hope you all enjoyed the bungee fail video. We will try again soon I hope. I have decided to minimize the blog entries to days without actual videos. I guess my writing skills just aren't cutting it. Not nearly as many people are digging the blog and it is just more crap that doesn't really matter anyhow :D

I am compiling todays video now but I spent way too much time on a fun surprise (my first attempt at animation with Premiere) and it is now 1230. I need sleep. I will upload when I wake up.

Much love!

10/10/10? (Day 10)

Freaky! That wasn't planned at all. The really wierd part is that I first had the idea to do this whole blog/video spam of the earth back on 5/5/5. It seems like it was only yesterday. Just kidding! But seriously I think it is a bit wierd that in a month that contains the date 10/10/10 there are 5 fridays, 5 saturdays, and 5 sundays. I heard from someone that this ocasion only occurs every 823 years. I thought that was abit off, I am no math wizard but I still thought it was off a bit so I asked my good friend Snopes.com. Turns out, that stupid sack of lies was just someone trying to sound SMRT and spamming their stoopidity to the world. I love misinformation :). Anyhow, they were just feeding off of the similar misinformation that went out about August of this year. It happens that 2010 is the fisrt year in 11 years that this has happened and there is a rotational pattern that it follows but I don't care that much about it.

Well this will be the last auto post for this weekend. Much love to all those that are enjoying my splurge of information. Help me out here share my links to the Youtube channel, this blog, and ThePhubar.com. While you are at it go ahead and subscribe to my feeds.
Thanks for all the support folks,

First absentee blog release (Day 9)

It is now 0930 Saturday morning here in fantabulous South Korea. I am probably on a train at this very moment on my way to Seoul. That's right folks, it's time to get my bungee on. About a month ago I took a zipline trip with the base outdoor rec group. It was fun, but it left me hungry for some adrenaline. I am afraid of heights so I expected to get a little adrenaline out of thie zip line. I got nothing. Don't get me wrong it was fun. I smiled and laughed a bit but it just didn't light my fire like I thought it would. So in the fashion that I learned from good old dad, I am going bungee jumping tomorrow. If there is one thing that I learned from him it was, "If it scares the shit out of you, do it." I am a firm believer in trying anything once, except for ê°€ (dog.) So here I go. Maybe Sunday night you all will get to witness my deat... fun adventure via YouTube.

I have been toying with a photography idea lately. I think this weekend I might actually get a chance to do some of it. Seoul is the perfect playground for that larger than life environment. I want to capture sets of images that can be imposed on one another to make me and my friends look like we are huge people sitting on the large buildings downtown and roughing stuff up. I think it will be a lot of fun as long as the weather allows it. Hopefully I can get some of this stuff together and uploaded to my Flickr for you guys to see.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. I know I am :)

So I was thinking (Day 8)

War week is finally over. I think for the most part I can see the YouTube videos are well on thier way to taking shape. I have been working closely with the star of the show and I think we are making some progress on creative vision and application. But you know how stars are, finicky, demanding little twit. You get 30 hits on one Youtube video and suddenly he wants his own trailer and a sign on his door. I just want the idiot to keep looking at the camera through an entire recording session. I will keep you posted on my progress here.

Back to my original train of thought... which reminds me, "train of thought" am I saying that right? It sounds a little bit on the silly side actually. I see a tiny little puffy train struggling through mud and porn and snow to deliver its tiny insignificant thoughts to the thought verification plant. I wonder if that can really be right. ...I was thinking that it might be a good idea if I tried to actually follow some sort of writing structure for these blogs. I really have been just babbling on in no specific order as if I were typing an e-mail to an old friend. Is that ok? Or, should I actually try to give these a formatted purpose each day?

I am counting on you! That is right, You! Both of my subscribers to comment on this blog entry and let me know what you think. For now, please enjoy todays web-isode. Be sure to drink more Ovaltine.... err... sorry, Be sure to stay though the episode to see a wonderful accelerated segment where I am stripping out of my exercise gear to the sound of the Circus Theme Song.

The exciting conclusion (Day 7)

Wow I am tired! I want my normal hours back that allow me time to do what I want not just eat and sleep. I finished up the MRE video with some nice touches, to include but not limited to, a blur filter so you don't have to witness the food getting chewed in my mouth while I eat and talk. I am a horrible excuse for a human being, I know. Well the good news is there is only one more day of this war for me and then I am off for a three day weekend.

It looks like the plan is to hit the Bungee tower in Yuldong park this Saturday morning. Hopefully we will figure something out from there.

I completely lost my train of thought because somebody is smoking in the dorm and my room is currently a billowing ashtray of someone elses funk. I just really wish that people in shared living facilities would think, if even only for a second, about someone other than themselves. Ex-smokers are the worst non smokers, I will step down off my box now.

Oh yes bungee! I hope to get some great video of how I died bungee jumping so that it can all me analyzed later. Or so people can witness me screaming like a girl as I fall. I don't know but it is going to happen and it is going to be great.

Alright world, It looks like I made it one week in! Contratulations are in order. I think the project has come a long way in seven days. I hope that the next seven are equally as productive as The Phubar continues its journey in eveolution. The question is, what will it become?

Heartburn in a bag! (Day 6)

Oh man, I really wish I hadn't eaten that MRE! It was not a Meal Ready to Eat! It was not! Heartburn has not been this bad in a long long while. I thought it would be fun to show everyone how to prepare a MRE and then chow down on said MRE. I thought wrong. The video is a little longer than I would like it to be and I had to cut it off to be continued tomorrow. I might save the continuation and place it back in the stream at a later date as a day 6.5 cut, or something like that. I don't know, I guess we shall all see.

Last night was a lot of fun (sarcasm.) We went into Alarm Blue, Mopp 4 on three separate occasions. The longest was for 1.5 hours. Let me explain that a little bit, Alarm Blue means we are getting attacked. Mopp 4 means we have to don out protective equipment such as gas mask and rubber gloves, which really complete the ensemble that we are already wearing during these exercises. The gear isn't too bad except for the fact that it gets really hot, like wearing a winter coat in the summertime. But these new masks we wear are great compared to their predecessor's. I think that maybe tomorrow I will finish up the MRE spot and then maybe the following day I can introduce everyone to the gear that I have been wearing.

I really wish this video would hurry up and compile. I need to get my beauty rest. On a lighter note I think having the videos up in a crisp clean 720p is a very nice touch. Maybe some day I will have a sexy guest or co-star and then the high-def will really pay off, hehehe.

Well folks, I do believe that is all I have in me for today. Remember, it's a frickin war out there so keep your head low and don't squeeze the Charmin.... whatever that means...

Getting there (Day 5)

All things considered I am doing incredibly well. I am figuring out a lot of new stuff about the applications that I am using to produce my little video clips and starting today they will be coming to you in 720p! Very nice!!! I took a little time and actually made a title sequence that I think is worth a crap. It is mainly a bunch of Photoshop layers stacked over the top of the Video layers in Adobe Premiere. I think it looks pretty damn good anyhow. I also figured out how to crop the video so that I can get full advantage of the video quality without the unwanted junk on the top and the bottom of the video area. once again, VERY NICE!!!

I suppose it is time for war week! I started it out with a little mood lighting and an overly excited explanation of the lameness that is an Air Force Exercise. This is a really tricky gig trying to share info with you all and not give away any info that my owners (Yeah the Air Force OWNS my ass at least until 2012, conveniently just up until we all perish in Armageddon on 12/21/2012) will be upset by. I want to keep this interesting so hopefully I wont let anyone down.

Before I forget I would like anyone and everyone to take a look at some of the work of a friend of mine. He is only 16 and currently lives in England and is one of the most talented graphic artists I have met. Go to http://www2.redbubble.com/people/ponti55 and take a look see for yourself. There are also links there to purchase prints of some of his work. He has a way will colors that just completes the mood of his image so well. I aspire to create anything that will make people feel the way his images do. They are absolutely fantastic.

Don't shave your tongue (Day 4)

Alright so I had a little fun today. Aside from tweaking the CSS on the site a little more, I found a neat site that lets me make the t-shirts that always pop into my head. Check it out at www.Cafepress.com/ThePhubar. Also, if you haven't watched any of my videos yet you must watch day 4. It still could have been fine tuned a bit but I am very happy with the outcome. I now have many ideas for similar stuff in the future.

I really didn't read anything about shaving your tongue on the Internet so don't get any ideas. It probably won't cure your morning breath. Probably... Hahahah! So tomorrow starts an entire week of combat action. Lemme see yer war face!!!

If you still don't follow then you will just have to come back tomorrow and see. For now, I am going to read a book and chill. Away from this computer!

Much love,

New WEBCAM!!! (Day 3)

I am totally stoked! My new webcam is wicked cool. I upgrade from a four year old camera that was compact and made to clip on to a laptop. The video quality was never really that great and with me doing these video blogs I finally had an excuse to upgrade. I purchased a Webcam Pro 9000 from the BX for $79.99. Not happy about the price but I am very satisfied with the product. As you can see if you watch the video the quality difference is like night and day. I really couldn't be happier with a webcam. Now if I had a real camera like "Panasonic AG-HVX200" now that would be something else. Maybe one day I will have a full on studio with the real nice stuff. For now, I will settle for my shiny new $80 webcam.

So today was my day off. I missed a few opportunities to go out with folks and ended up staying in. That's alright because this way when I wake up I wont have a terrible hang over. I don't mind drinking so much, it is really just the hang over and feeling like complete shit the next day that gets to me. It doesn't help much that people around here don't just go out for a few drinks. It always ends up being a sport or a competition, haha. And then, HANG OVER. I did get a chance to waste my entire evening trying to learn how to build a layout in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for thephubar.com. I am making progress I think. Funny thing is, I seriously fought with it for about 5 hours and only have half of the page up and working. You can see it here. I do like the new design a little better though, it seems more stylish and crisp to me. Check it out and let me know what you think.

That's really all that has been going on today. We are going to have some great fun next week though. It's a war baby! If you don't know what I am talking about don't sweat it. You will know soon enough. Until then, LEMME SEE YER WARFACE!!!!

Let me explain (Day 2)

This is going to be a challenge for me. I posted the video last night before I went to work and I was hoping to plug in a short blog entry as well but didn't have time to take care of it then. I figured I would just type it up in the morning. In the morning when I was supposed to type it up I completely forgot all about it and passed out. I guess I was making up for a whole week of 3-6 hours nights of sleep because I got me a solid 10 hours today. Only problem is now I have a wicked hangover-like headache.

Feedback welcome:
I am new to this and I would like it to become something that people enjoy. Some of my thoughts for improvement are almost segments like in a goofy newscast (i.e. Overused catch phrase of the day, or foreign language word of the day. I am currently learning Korean so this wouldn't be too hard.) There is a lot of work that goes in to making a formatted show. As such I think I will create a bunch of little side segments and just plug them in at random. But most days will be more like a better version of todays episode as time and skill progresses. I am just getting used to putting myself in front of the camera. As time goes on I will get more comfortable and mroe of "me" will shine through and hopefully that will be a good thing.

I am a firm believer in the fact that you really can do anything you want with a little time and practice. Some people are naturally good at certain things this doesn't mean that those skills cannot also be learned. I believe that this world is full of half ass heros running the show and leading the way. The reason for this is because while the majority of people with the real skill and talent in those areas didn't have the drive to push themselves into those positions in life.

Thanks for reading folks. Constructive critisism is always welcome.

Hello world! (Day 1)

Well here it is. Day one has arrived. Lesson learned after recording my first video; Script! Not crazy blown out in depth script or anything but some basic outlining would have helped a lot. I got so worked up about getting this ball rolling that I overlooked the fact that it might be easier to chat it up with the world if I organize my thoughts in a visual format before turning on the camera.

Seriously, the take that I actually posted to my Youtube channel was my fifth attempt at recording a continuous sequence, and it was HORRIBLE. The only reason I posted it was because I had to post something and I was running out of time before work. Oh well, I suppose I had to start somewhere. At this point I am just glad that I don't have a huge following of people that I let down or something. Now after the fact that the video is posted I am realizing that there is a ton of stuff that I had wanted to put into the first post that I didn't. I was going to include a cheesy little sequence where I flipped the video horizontally while I alternated a second role congratulating myself on actually posting my first video. Yeah a lot of my thoughts are cheesy but I am not ashamed; I am going to post it anyway.

Until tomorrow,

p.s. After today the post script cracks are going away, at least until I have something that really belongs here.

p.p.s. Crap that kind of belonged there. Seriously, I will be keeping the use of post script to pertinent uses only.

Yet another progressive day (Day -1)

There is no day zero so the clock starts tomorrow!
Today I harassed a few Friends and family for more likes and follows, heheh. But more importantly I actually put some content on www.ThePhubar.com that I believe gives its existence a little purpose. Check it out and let me know what you think. It currently contains the first draft so there are likely to be changes applied, but it will do for now.

I still need to make a neat'o little intro sequence for my YouTube entries. I will try to get that rocking tomorrow before the first entry gets published. Man this is gonna be an interesting ride. I fear that my delusions of grandeur may be affecting my excitement and impatience levels. Oh, well.

Here is how I see this happening. Most days will have a video blog posted on YouTube which will also be posted here with a short intro of some sort. Some days I might not be able to post to YouTube so I will have to settle for a brief entry here on the blog. But either way there must be 365 consecutive days of entries to either the Blog or the YouTube channel. The facebook and twitter interaction is just going to help let people know that there is new content to be viewed. Flickr is just there so that everyone can see my photos. I like to take pictures and maybe one day I will have a camera that is worth a crap and some neat lenses. Until then I will keep snapping amateur shots with my canon s210. I will also post high resolution copies of my digital art up there for people to see.

I think that is effectively enough rambling for today.

p.s. I don't have anything to post script about today either but I feel like I would be breaking a tradition if there wasn't something here. :)

p.p.s. Ditto.

A lot of progress yesterday (Day -2)

It is amazing how much you can achieve in a day when sleep effectively eludes you. I tried to lay down yesterday after my blog entry, I was so tired I passed out fast. Three hours later I woke up to find myself completely alert. I didn't give in so easily though, I stayed in bed for about another 30-40 minutes before I totally gave up. I went for a run and did some push-ups and sit-ups hoping to tire out again. NOPE! Oh well.

Anyhow, I got a lot of time to work on the site. If you haven't seen it yet go to http://www.thephubar.com/ and tell me what you think. Keep in mind that for now it is just a one stop access to all the social media networks I am tied in to. I might eventually make it a portfolio as well, we shall see. There are a lot of neat little widgets out there for websites. I really like the 3d flash ball of my Flickr Photostream.

There are still a couple of things that I am trying to do with the website. I would like to pull my status feed from facebook in that big open area. And I also want to make different versions of that background with my face on it. The other versions will be making different faces and will swap out at random. Or, maybe I can make them reflect my mood. I don't know, we shall see. Anyhow short and sweet ought to do it for today. I am exhausted! See you all in 3 hours ;)

p.s. I have no valid post script for today but I thought this would make me laugh to type it out.

p.p.s I was right :)

Getting it all set up (Day -3)

So, it has been a bit since I have attempted to really set up a website. This new age of interconnectivity in social networking is pretty interesting. A few years back I (while I was in college) ran a web design business on my own. I utilized PHP, mySQL, and all that fun scripting stuff. I could do some neat stuff but I never really got ultra proficient. As such, it often took me large amounts of time to fumble my way through stuff and figure it out. I could always get there but at what cost. When I decided to tackle this little personal venture I was concerned that it would take forever trying to learn all the API's for the different websites and such, boy was I wrong.

I started on Facebook. I spent about 10 hours fumbling around trying to see how to put it into use and which would be the best course of action. All I really wanted was my status updates on my personal homepage. Then, just as I was about to vomit FBML, I decided to take a break and explore another app.

I fired up a new Twitter account. Then I checked my Facebook and set up a fan page for myself. Then Facebook backhanded me with a "would you like to link your twitter account to this Facebook account and automatically update your Twitter status?" So for a moment I debated on tearing out my hair and I realized that I had none. Instead I painted on a frusterated grin and clicked YES!

So it turns out that Twitter has little widgets all over the damn place that will paste your activity where ever you want it. In summary, that was 10 hours of investigating development for something that has been done just fine in a different direction. I love it!!!

Once I got that flowing it all just kind of works. I have my Youtube build into my blog here and the main site as well as linked on Facebook so that everytime I create a new video blog the info will be passed around to each of the socail media services. Now I just need to design my site and turn it on, then find some followers so that I don't feel like I am wasting my time completely.

~The Phubar, out...

p.s. don't worry, the flowing product will be of epic proportions. Or I will receive lots and lots of e-mails asking for peoples time back.

p.p.s there will be no time refunds.

So, Here I am.

I am currently beginning an experiment on personal growth / capabilites. I want to see if I can stick to it. I am tying in Blogger, Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and a personal website (http://www.thephubar.com/) to share my thoughts with the world. Or at least the portion of the world that wants to see what is in my head. I believe that it I put it out there then there can be some good in some way linked to my thoughts. I will elaborate further tomorrow, for now I have to go to work.

It is 10:26 PM here in Kunsan, South Korea.
Good morning America. Hahahah
